The distinction between science, engineering and technology is not always clear. Science is the reasoned investigation or study of phenomena, aimed at discovering enduring principles among elements of the phenomenal world by employing formal techniques such as the scientific method. Technologies are not usually exclusively products of science, because they have to satisfy requirements such as utility, usability and safety.
Today and throughout history, technology influences and is influenced by such societal issues/factors as economics, values, ethics, institutions, groups, the environment, government, among others. The discipline studying the impacts of science, technology, and society and vice versa is called Science and technology in society. Complex manufacturing and construction techniques and organizations are needed to make and maintain more modern technologies, and entire industries have arisen to develop succeeding generations of increasingly more complex tools. Modern technology increasingly relies on training and education – their designers, builders, maintainers, and users often require sophisticated general and specific training.
Learn more about the Art Harper Saturday Academy, a multi-year program designed to inspire and prepare local high school students to pursue post-secondary education and careers in STEM-related fields. The Department of Biosystems Engineering focuses on the application of technology for the production of agricultural materials and products as well as natural labor in the environment and agricultural production systems and agricultural production processes. Food Technology Department has collaborated with the Business and Industry World and related Professional Associations in the learning process. Florida Tech’s approach to academics is research-driven, high-tech and hands-on, allowing our students to both gain knowledge and get real experience applying it. Similarly, the early peoples of Mesopotamia, the Sumerians, learned to use the Tigris and Euphrates rivers for much the same purposes. But more extensive use of wind and water power required another invention.
Initially, technology was seen as an extension of the human organism that replicated or amplified bodily and mental faculties. New analysis by the McKinsey Technology Council highlights the development, possible uses, and industry effects of advanced technologies. The IEEE EAB seeks qualified professionals from industry, government, and academia to serve as evaluators for accrediting engineering and engineering technology programs. IEEE and its members inspire a global community through highly-cited publications, conferences, technology standards, and professional and educational activities.

Many negative impacts of technology can be mitigated through technological innovations like renewable energy in transportation and industry, genetically modified crops to address soil depletion, and space exploration to mitigate global catastrophic risks. Reuters, the news and media division of Thomson Reuters, is the world’s largest multimedia news provider, reaching billions of people worldwide every day. Reuters provides business, financial, national and international news to professionals via desktop terminals, the world’s media organizations, industry events and directly to consumers.
Clothing, adapted from the fur and hides of hunted animals, helped humanity expand into colder regions; humans began to migrate out of Africa by 200,000 B.C.E. and into other continents, such as Eurasia. The use of tools by early humans was partly a process of discovery, partly of evolution. Early humans evolved from a race of foraging hominids which were already bipedal, with a brain mass approximately one third that of modern humans.
Human ancestors have been using stone and other tools since long before the emergence of Homo sapiens approximately 200,000 years ago. The earliest methods of stone tool making, known as the Oldowan “industry,” date back to at least 2.3 million years ago, with the earliest direct evidence of tool usage found in Ethiopia within the Great Rift Valley, dating back to 2.5 million years ago. This era of stone tool use is called the Paleolithic, or “Old stone age,” and spans all of human history up to the development of agriculture approximately 12,000 years ago. Technology can be most broadly defined as the entities, both material and immaterial, created by the application of mental and physical effort in order to achieve some value.
Our faculty and students are at the leading edge of research in Canada, developing innovative solutions to today’s complex problems. Music and technology majors aren’t the only ones to express their love of music on campus. Outdoor music festivals like the OnPoint Music & Arts Festival and Stevens’ radio station WCPR are just some of the outlets that showcase our students’ passion for music and art.
