Code hidden inside the latest iOS 27 beta points toward Apple’s first foldable iPhone, according to findings from a tech outlet that dug into the developer release. The discovery centers on references to multiple batteries — something no current iPhone has ever used.
The fourth developer beta of iOS 27 contains “Battery Health” strings that mention an iPhone with more than one internal battery. The code includes phrases like “The batteries in this iPhone are performing as expected” and “the health of the batteries in this iPhone has significantly degraded.”
Those strings use the plural “batteries” instead of the singular “battery” found in every previous iPhone software version. Another line warns that “one of the batteries” may not be genuine — apparently anticipating a scenario where a customer replaces only one battery in a multi-battery device.
For nearly two decades, every iPhone has shipped with a single embedded battery. The appearance of plural references in system code is a clear departure. While the strings don’t make sense for current models, they would fit a foldable phone that needs separate power cells for each half of the display.
That’s how other foldable smartphones handle the problem. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 7, for example, splits its battery into two smaller units, one in each side of the device. Apple could take a similar approach, placing a battery in each half of a foldable iPhone to power the larger screen without making the device too thick.

For users, this would mean a shift in how battery replacements work. Instead of swapping out a single pack, owners might need to replace one side at a time — and the software would need to track the health of each cell independently. The code suggests Apple is already building that logic into iOS, even if the hardware isn’t announced yet.
The battery references aren’t the only clue. The first iOS 27 beta also contained mentions of “angle detection” and “fold states” — terms that have little use on a standard slab phone but are essential for a device that bends in half. These kinds of software hooks let the operating system know whether the screen is open, partially open, or closed, and adjust the interface accordingly.
Apple has not confirmed any plans for a foldable iPhone. Rumors have circulated for years, but the company has never publicly acknowledged such a product. The code found in the beta doesn’t guarantee a launch — software strings often appear long before a device ships, or sometimes for features that never see the light of day.
Still, the accumulating evidence is hard to ignore. Between the battery health plurals, the angle detection logic, and the fold state references, iOS 27 is increasingly looking like it’s being prepared for a device that doesn’t exist yet. Whether Apple calls it the iPhone Ultra or something else, the fall release cycle could finally bring a foldable iPhone to market — if the company decides to pull the trigger with a new device release.
