Apple’s smallest tablet, the iPad mini, has carved out a niche for users who want an iPad they can slip into a coat pocket. It’s not built to replace a laptop or serve as a digital canvas for most artists. Instead, it’s a device for reading ebooks, streaming shows, and occasional note-taking with an Apple Pencil. For many, it’s the most portable—and arguably the most fun—iPad Apple makes.
Right now, though, it’s a bad time to buy one.
The OLED iPad mini is coming soon
According to a recent report, Apple plans to release an OLED iPad mini later this year, possibly in October. This would be the first time the mini line gets the display technology, which is already used in the higher-end iPad Pro models. The upgrade could make a noticeable difference in how the tablet looks and feels.
OLED screens work differently from the current LCD panels in the iPad mini. LCDs rely on a single backlight that illuminates the entire display, which can make dark scenes appear grayish, especially in dim lighting. OLED pixels, on the other hand, light up individually and can turn off completely. This allows for true blacks and higher contrast, particularly in movies or apps with dark interfaces.

Apple could have chosen mini-LED instead, a technology used in some MacBook Pro and iPad Pro models. Mini-LED offers better contrast than traditional LCDs but doesn’t match OLED’s precision, since it still relies on zones of backlighting rather than individual pixels. For now, Apple appears to be betting on OLED for the mini.
Waiting could save you money
The new model isn’t just about better visuals. Its arrival will likely push down the price of the current iPad mini, which Apple may discontinue. Retailers like Amazon and Best Buy will still sell remaining stock of the older model, and they’ll probably discount it to clear inventory. There’s no guarantee, but history suggests prices will drop once the new version hits shelves.
That said, the OLED iPad mini won’t be cheap. The improved display, combined with general price increases across Apple’s lineup, means the new model will likely cost more than the current one. Some buyers may decide the upgrade isn’t worth it, while others will see it as a must-have. Either way, waiting a few months gives you more options—including the chance to buy last year’s model at a lower price.
October isn’t far off. For now, the best move might be to hold off and see what happens.
